IVF after 40: What You Need to Know
We get lots of questions from women who are 40 and older about IVF. Many of you wonder what is the success rate of IVF when you get older. I'm going to answer 5 common questions.
How fast do pregnancy rates drop after 40?
The answer is: Pretty fast! The chance for delivering a live born baby is about 10% at age 40 and it drops about 2% per year. So it's 8% at 41, 6 % at 42, 4 % at 43 and 2% at 44.
Do supplements like DHEA improve the odds of a live birth in women over the age of 40?
We looked at the pregnancy rates for the clinic that promotes DHEA the most on the internet and YouTube. Their live birth rate for 41 and 42 year olds was 5.6%. Which is lower than the national average!
Over age 42 it was 2.6% Also lower than the national average!!
If you had a previous live born baby before doing IVF, do you have a better chance of having another baby with IVF?
The answer is yes! By about 1% At age 41 or 42 women had a baby before doing IVF had a pregnancy rate of 9%. Those that never had a baby had a rate of 8%. For 43 and 44 year olds your pregnancy rate jumps from 3% to 4% if you previously had a baby.
After age 40 what has the best chance for pregnancy? A transfer on day 3 or day 5?
No contest, for all age groups 40 and over a day 5 transfer resulted in significantly higher chance for pregnancy than a day three transfer.
How likely am I to have a miscarriage with IVF after age 40?
If you are not testing embryos for chromosome abnormalities, the miscarriage rate increases from just under 30% at age 40 to nearly 60% at age 44.
Our Bottom Line :
Women who are 40 years of age or older do have a tougher time getting pregnant even with treatments like IVF. But tougher does not mean impossible! So it's perfectly acceptable to keep on trying.
